Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is a public service broadcaster. The main shareholder is the Foundation for Broadcast Culture, a government funded institution. MBC does, however, operate on the basis of advertising revenue. This dual nature of commercial and public entity is unique among Korean broadcasters and has earned MBC the trust of the public.
MBC is a multimedia broadcaster dominating Korean terrestrial television and radio channels. The corporation was established in 1961 and today has a network of 19 regional stations and 10 subsidiaries nationwide. Currently, MBC operates a national terrestrial analog television channel, an FM and an AM channel, the standard FM channel, and four cable channels, three of which are broadcast via satellite.
